I searched and found quite a few specific questions about runes, but I'd like some basic information on them. What are they? Where can you get them? How do you use them?

Runes are basically upgrade components. You can use them to add special properties to your stuff. You'll get them off of certain items with special properties that you use an expert salvage kit on. You use them by clicking on them and then on the item you want to upgrade.
